HOUSING: ON CAMPUS

FIRST-YEAR QUAD
Four connected buildings — Homer, Nickerson, South and East halls — form the basis of the hillside Quad complex, where freshmen appreciate the opportunity to get to know each other outside of classes. In the Quad, you’ll have ready access to The Met, RISD’s main dining facility, and to the Catanzaro Fitness Center — both part of the complex, along with offices for Health Services, Public Safety and Residence Life. The four-story Homer and Nickerson buildings house between 12 and 38 students per floor, who live in single or shared rooms with common bathrooms on each floor. East and South halls offer suites with four to eight single or shared rooms, common lounges and several individual bathrooms. Although exact sizes and shapes vary, double rooms in all Quad halls are approximately 168' and singles roughly 94 sf. You’ll also find common spaces — workrooms, laundry facilities, a game room and TV lounges — throughout the Quad.

HOUSES/SUITES
Students who choose these housing options tend to socialize with each other quite a bit, often making dinner together or going out as a group to music and dance clubs, or to see a movie or play. Sometimes they just stay home, rent a movie and order pizza. With common lounges and shared kitchen and laundry facilities, the houses and suites are designed to let you determine your own level of social interaction.

· Hill Houses: historic College Hill
RISD’s eight residential houses offer the opportunity to connect with housemates from various disciplines. Between 17 and 32 students live in each of the houses, which were originally built in the 1800s as private homes. Every room is different, and many offer such appealing features of 19th-century architecture as stained glass windows and 14-foot ceilings.

· Alcove Suites (new housing): floors 3-5, 15 Westminster Street
Alcove Suites feature two sleeping/living rooms (some singles, some doubles) that share a common entry, bathroom and small food prep area with a sink, refrigerator and two-burner stovetop. The double rooms in these suites have a sleeping alcove for each student with its own floor-to-ceiling drape. This allows for a higher degree of privacy while still giving you the economy of a shared room. Each of the three Alcove floors also features a common room and student workrooms.

APARTMENTS/LOFTS
This style of living allows for relative independence within a small group setting. All bedrooms in our apartments are singles, which means you rent an individual bedroom and share the common spaces with others, either of your choosing or assigned by Residence Life. The open floor plans of the lofts allow flexible living for one or two people. Lofts are rented by the unit only, and house one or two people. Since both alternatives have a kitchen area, participation in a meal plan is optional.

· 15 West Apartments: floors 6-9, 15 Westminster Street
These air-conditioned apartments are available as either three- or four-bedroom units. All have full kitchens and common living/dining areas, and each bedroom is meant to accommodate one person.

· 15 West Lofts: floors 10 + 11, 15 Westminster Street
These units are designed to meet the needs of older students and those with spouses. All loft spaces offer private baths and range in size from the miniloft with snack area (roughly 250 sf, with a small refrigerator and microwave) to the double loft and one-bedroom loft (both about 600 sf and suitable for a couple). These larger lofts have a dining area, more live/sleep space and a full kitchen (with dishwasher). In between the smallest and largest lofts, you can choose the studio loft (roughly 380 sf, with sink, under-counter refrigerator and two-burner stovetop). All lofts are rented on a 12-month basis and come furnished with tables, chairs, lounge seating and double beds (twin in the mini-loft).

· Benefit Street Apartments
Two recently renovated buildings on the north end of campus offer a similar style of living. Colonial Apartments houses 125 students in efficiency, studio, two- or three-bedroom units, while Dwight House offers 21 studio apartments (with priority given to graduate students).
