INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE: OVERVIEW

The study of Interior Architecture differs from the study of Architecture in its commitment to specialized study along one of several pathways. The program begins with the mandatory first year "Interior Architecture Design Principles" which provides a basis for subsequent studios and is intended to introduce students to the ideas and vocabulary of the subject area. Advance studios dominate the remainder of the course work, supplemented with a broad range of technical, theoretical and historical courses.

The department identifies three specializations or “pathways” which provide choice throughout the advanced design studios. Students have, in this way, the opportunity, working with professional experts, to gain in-depth experience in their elected areas of interest. In all cases, the common element is a concern for spatial issues, informed by attention to detail. The core curriculum ensures that the successful student will have a sound grasp of all matters necessary to enable today’s practitioner to relate to fellow professionals in the building industry and allied fields. To support this, students are encouraged to work in studios shared with other RISD departments.

Much of the department’s work takes place using sophisticated computer programs. (Follow this link to learn about the department’s laptop computer requirement.) Good drawing and marking skills also remain highly valued. These important skills lead to the formation of a quality portfolio of work, which demonstrates an energetic professional approach and helps prepare students for employment once their degree is earned.

The program culminates in the successful completion of an individually selected Degree Project, which is intended to be a clear demonstration of expertise in a chosen area of specialization. Through the completion of this project, which is intended to be a synthesis of the many and varied inputs of the program, students are able to position themselves on graduation to enter a buoyant and diverse job market where many exciting opportunities and directions are possible.
