UNDERGRADUATE: JEWELRY + METALSMITHING

“As with any art form, the talent and motivation for outstanding work in jewelry and metalsmithing lies within the individual. Our department provides a well-rounded curriculum and positive work environment for motivated students in which discovery and development can flourish.” — Professor Robin Quigley MFA ’76

RISD’s Jewelry + Metalsmithing curriculum offers progressive levels of design complexity and technical challenges. During your studies, you will be introduced to both the tradition of the goldsmith and the pursuit of unique contemporary work.

A close-knit department with a low student/faculty ratio, Jewelry + Metalsmithing offers individual attention and a free exchange of knowledge and techniques. As you seek unique design solutions and learn to execute your ideas with skill and ingenuity, you will work in a comfortable, well-equipped studio with other actively engaged students. You will also be encouraged to take unconventional departures that are expressive and responsive to changing values. By exercising your critical thinking skills, analyzing readings and engaging in lively group discussions, you will explore and question the inherent relationship of jewelry to the body.

Throughout the program, students benefit from recurring contact with the professional world. “We recognize the importance of inviting a broad spectrum of active, innovative jewelry artists to RISD each year,” notes Assistant Professor Tracy Steepy. “Visiting artists from throughout the US, Europe and beyond offer our students valuable exposure to current critical analysis and artistic practices developing in our field today.” They also provide refreshing insight and international perspectives during critiques and individual studio visits. In addition, the department assists students in finding rewarding professional internships at selected companies or studios.
