Dale had served as chairman since 2004, and in a letter to the trustees, she noted that the chairmanship of RISDs Board has been an immense honor and a very great pleasure. The RISD community is, to me, the most outstanding group of talented individuals under one umbrella that I have ever encountered.
Sherman, who has served as vice chairman of RISDs Board since 2004, is president and CEO of Bancorp Rhode Island, Inc., a publicly traded company, and its wholly owned subsidiary Bank Rhode Island. Prior to spearheading the creation of the bank in 1996, Sherman was a partner in a major regional law firm and also had served as president and CEO of two other New England banks. Her civic involvement extends beyond RISD to include service currently on the boards of The Providence Foundation, the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council and Crossroads Rhode Island.
A graduate of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, Sherman earned a JD from the University of Denver College of Law and holds an honorary D.B.A. from Johnson & Wales University. She has been recognized with numerous professional and public service awards, including the 2003 Business Excellence Award for Business Leadership from Providence Business News; the 2003 Humanitarian of the Year award from the National Jewish Medical and Research Center; the 2001 Ernst & Young New England Entrepreneur of the Year in Financial Services award; and the 2001 Outstanding Women in Business Award from the City of Providence and the Providence Tourism Council. Ms. Sherman was recently inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, and later in May will be named Citizen of the Year by the March of Dimes.
Other Board members elected as officers or continuing in office include Stuart J. Murphy 64 IL, who is beginning his fourth term as a vice chairman; Philip Tobey B.ARCH 66, who has also been elected as a vice chairman; Edward H. Levine 76 ID, who continues as treasurer for a second term; and M. Kate Rittmann (mother of Charles Rittman 95 ID), who will continue on as secretary for a second term.
