DIY Wearable for Kids

London-based alumna Bethany Koby 00 GD and her husband Daniel Hirschmann say their son was pretty much born with an iPAD in his hand and they wanted to ensure that he wasn’t just “consuming technology” as he grew, but using it to be productive and creative. They launched the tech-for-kids company Technology Will Save Us in 2012 and are now preparing to release the Mover Kit, “an active play wearable that kids make and code themselves.”

“We developed the Mover Kit with the help of over 300 kids,” says Koby. “It’s a small, portable device that encourages active play, learning and adventure with technology.”

The educational device combines motion sensors, a compass and rainbow lights that respond to movement. Kids not only assemble the watch-like Mover Kit but program it with apps they create themselves using open-ended software that encourages play and imagination.

During product testing, kids used the Mover Kit to build on activities like playing hot potato and running obstacle courses. One tester programmed it to light up after two minutes of tooth-brushing to prove to his mom that he was doing a good job.

Koby points out that kids only use a computer while programming the Mover Kit. “It’s not something that needs a screen,” she explains. “It’s something you use out in the world.”

The Kickstarter campaign the company launched to fund production is open for two more days. Backers have already pledged more than double the original $50,000 goal, and the campaign is closing in on its stretch goal of $125,000.
