Maria Canada

Maria Canada joined the Apparel Design department in 2014 and divides her time between Providence and Sweden. She has a comprehensive background in design and fine art making processes as well as a mastery of technical craft related to fashion design and studio management. She is deeply engaged in community practices and discussion at RISD and at New Urban Arts in downtown Providence.

Before moving to the East Coast, Canada worked in personal and music management as well as event production while running an independent studio, consulting, styling and creating custom apparel from ready-to-wear to bridal. In the classroom she prioritizes technical craft and conceptual engagement, striving to help students become self-aware, socially intelligent, globally conscious and curious creators.
