Welcome to the RISD Pre-College Program Scholarship page, which includes a downloadable Pre-College Program Scholarship Application form and answers to frequently asked questions.

Very Important: A very limited number of scholarships are available for students who meet the requirements and whose family demonstrates significant financial need. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who may apply?
Students who are 16 to 18 years of age, as of the start of the program, and have finished their sophomore year of high school, and whose families demonstrate significant financial need. United States citizenship or permanent residence status is also required.

What type of scholarship is available?
Full and partial scholarships are available to help eligible students attend the RISD Pre-College Program. Depending on the amount of the award, grants may cover tuition, room and board, and art supplies.

When is the deadline for the scholarship application?
To be considered for a scholarship, applications must include all required attachments and be in the mail and postmarked by Friday, April 3, 2009. Note: Incomplete applications are not processed.

How are the scholarship-granting decisions made?
Awards are made on a competitive basis. A team of reviewers will examine each application for the following:

* Financial Need: Applicants must demonstrate significant financial need. Funds are limited and the quantity of applications is high. Financial need is the first criteria that must be met in order for an application to pass to the next part of the review process.
* Artistic Merit: as demonstrated by student portfolios.
* Ability to contribute to the cultural, intellectual, artistic and other diversity of the program as expressed in a written essay.
* A high school transcript reflecting an academic record that exhibits motivated learning in the arts, the desire to achieve success, and the dedication necessary to complete the Pre-College Program's demanding workload.

How do I complete the scholarship application process?
Complete a 2009 Pre-College Program Scholarship Application Form and submit with all the required documents listed below. If you submit a Scholarship Application Form you do not need to also submit a standard Pre-College Application Form. Mail your application and attachments to:

What attachments do I need to complete my application?
* Copies of parent(s) 2008 1040 tax form (include both parents' forms if filed separately) plus a copy of the parent(s) most recent pay voucher or documentation substantiating current income. Note: If 2008 taxes have not been filed, please submit 2007 forms and then provide a copy of the 2008 form to us once it has been filed with the IRS.
* Deposit (optional): Should you wish to reserve a space in the program in the event that a scholarship is not awarded, a nonrefundable deposit ($500 for boarding students; $350 for commuting students) must be included with your application. If you do not plan to attend the program in the event that you do not receive a scholarship, you do not need to send a deposit.
* A disc containing five (5) artwork samples that best represent the student's artistic abilities. The disc must be accompanied by a sheet of paper with referenced descriptions of the work included on the disc. Please be sure to put your name on both the disc and description sheet. File format: Images should be in jpeg file format, and be no larger than 2,000 x 2,000 pixels but no smaller than 640 x 640 pixels. Video, animation and movie files should be exported to QuickTime format, and be at least 320 x 240 in pixel dimensions. Please no PowerPoint files. Important: include the image list on the CD in an .rtf or .doc file.
* A 250-word essay explaining how you would add to the cultural, intellectual, artistic and other diversity of the program. Note: This statement will suffice as the personal statement required for the standard Pre-College application. You do not need to send us two different personal statements.
* Most recent high school transcript.
* One letter of recommendation from your high school art teacher or guidance counselor.

If I apply for a scholarship, and don't receive one, am I still eligible to attend the Pre-College Program?
Yes, but only if you have submitted a deposit.
