Public Safety

Patrolling the campus on foot, bicycle and in cruisers, the Department of Public Safety operates around the clock every day to provide service to the RISD community. The department is responsible for campus safety, security, parking, shuttle and escort.

The officers receive annual recertification in first aid and CPR to provide emergency medical care until an ambulance arrives. If appropriate, the officers treat and transport the injured to the on-campus medical facility or local hospital. Several public safety officers are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) offering a higher level of emergency medical assistance.

In addition to the state regulated EMT training, all of our Officers attend the Rhode Island College and University Public Safety Training Academy (RICUPS) hosted at Bryant University. Training in this academy includes: report writing, investigation and interview techniques, conflict management, crime prevention, diversity issues, and much more. Several of our Public Safety Officers are certified as instructors in the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) program, Defensive Tactics, Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and CPR, First Aid, and AED. Many officers have also received training in Weapons of Mass Destruction and Domestic Terrorism. Although Public Safety officers do not have the power of arrest, they have a close working relationship with state and local police. Excellent response and service is provided to RISD from these outside agencies.

All criminal activity should be promptly reported to RISD Department of Public Safety. Complaints are received here in person or over the phone. (See address and phone numbers above.) Located at the entrance to the Quad Residence Halls, the Quad office serves as the dispatching point for the Public Safety Officers.

In the letter provide your dates of attendance, major, and name at that time of attendance (it may have since changed due to marriage, divorce, etc.). If you are currently enrolled in classes or the semester has just ended, tell us whether to send the transcript immediately or to wait for the grades from the current term to be recorded. Enclose a check or money order for $4 per copy made out to RISD. Transcripts are usually processed within one to three days after receipt, a little longer during registration.
