Since its founding in 1877, RISD has been dedicated to helping students “successfully apply the principles of Art to the requirements of trade and manufacture,” as its founding mission statement reads. Faculty have teamed up with leaders in business and industry to offer students studio projects with clear ramifications beyond the confines of campus. Over the years design majors have benefited from the opportunity to research and develop proposals for companies and organizations as diverse as Nissan, NASA, Maytag and the Red Cross.
