Faculty: Katharina Galor

Biography

Katharina Galor is a faculty member in the Department of History of Art and Visual Culture where she teaches the archaeology of Jerusalem, Palestine and the architecture of ancient synagogues, churches and mosques. She also teaches at Brown University and has taught for a number of years in Jerusalem, at both the Rothberg School for Overseas Students at the Hebrew University and the Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française. Katharina has conducted excavations in France, Italy and Israel. She is currently collaborating with several engineers on a digital archaeology project focusing on the sites of Tel es-Safi and Apollonia-Arsuf in Israel. Katharina has published on domestic architecture and jewelry, as well as on the sites of Qumran, Tiberias, Sepphoris, Apollonia-Arusf, Masada, Jericho and Jerusalem.

Academic Research/Areas of Interest

In addition to her primary interest in the art, architecture and archaeology of Greco-Roman Palestine, she has conducted research and field projects in conjunction with scholars working in other regions of the Mediterranean basin including Italy, France, Lebanon and Egypt. Specific research interests include sacred, civic and domestic architecture, mosaics and wall decoration, water installations, and more recently, digital visualizations with applications to representations of artifacts, architecture and archaeological sites. On a more theoretical level, Katharina is interested in the iconography and more generally speaking in the material culture related to rituals, cultural identity and religious beliefs, most specifically the Jewish, Pagan and early Christian traditions. Her recently completed book on the art and archaeology of Jerusalem (to be published by Yale University Press) brought her forward to explore the archaeological and cultural trends of additional periods beyond her usual focus on the Classical periods.
