Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in higher education, David Proulx has strengthened RISD in many ways since joining our community in 2018, first as senior vice president of finance and administration and then, beginning in July 2021, as interim president.
At RISD, Proulx has significantly improved the institution’s financial and administrative processes, promoted fiscal and budgetary transparency, and established structures for community members to give input on key administrative issues and decision making. Proulx’s leadership has also been instrumental in helping navigate RISD through the tremendous financial and operational challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and during the search for our 18th president.
Proulx came to RISD from Franklin & Marshall College, where he was vice president of finance and administration and treasurer and special advisor to the president for revenue. There he led the implementation of a new administrative software system, helped develop an integrated facilities plan leading to the renovation of several buildings, established a partnership with UPenn Lancaster General Health to provide health and wellness services to student and led the development of the college’s first Sustainability Master Plan, among other accomplishments.
Prior to his time at Franklin & Marshall, Proulx spent 14 years at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), including as its associate vice president for finance and interim associate vice president for human resources. He currently serves on many national and regional finance and higher education boards, including the New England Commission on Higher Education, the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce.
A native of Bedford, NH, he earned both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA from UNH, and also completed the Management Development Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Proulx and his wife Rachel have three children, Madeleine, Evan and Max. In addition to spending time with his family, Dave enjoys participating in various sports activities, fishing, hiking and rooting for Boston sports teams.
