MJ Tyson is an artist and jeweler from New Jersey. She received her BFA from RISD in 2008 and returned to earn her MFA in 2017. Between studies, she co-founded and taught classes at The Bloomfield School in Brooklyn.
Tyson’s primary interest is the relationship between people and their personal objects, which has led her to work on conservation projects at the RISD Museum and study appraisal at New York University. These outside fields have a strong influence on her studio work and research. Her thesis, The Last Objects, explores destruction as a counterpoint to creation and the reincarnation of material.
