Maia Chao is an interdisciplinary artist who works in video, performance, sculpture and social practice. She is co-creator of Look at Art. Get Paid. (LAAGP), which is currently sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Chao has received commissions from The Shed, The New School and Tufts University and shown at Brown University, the RISD Museum, Parsons School of Design and Provincetown Art Association and Museum. She has presented at ICA Philadelphia, Philadelphia Museum of Art (Designs for Different Futures), the Queens Museum (Open Engagement), Museum of Fine Arts Boston (National Art Education Association), Minneapolis Institute of Art (Museums as Sites for Social Action), New York University and the CUE Art Foundation. Her work has been discussed in BOMB Magazine, The Paris Review and Hyperallergic.
Recent fellowships and residencies include: the Fine Arts Work Center (2017), Andrew W. Mellon Artist in Residence at Haverford College (2018), Asian American Arts Alliance of NYC, Van Lier Fellow (2019) and Pioneer Works residency (2019–20). A Fulbright grantee, Chao holds a BA from Brown University and an MFA from RISD.
