Doug Johnston moved to NYC after graduating from RISD to begin a life in designing textiles. In 1974 he established the design studio Brainstorm, which created original artwork primarily for the fashion industry. Famous clientele included Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta, Jeffrey Banks and Isaac Mizrahi. In 1988 the business morphed to a consultancy providing original artwork, design direction and production oversight for several fabric establishments.

Johnston relocated to New England in 2000 and became art director for Quaker Fabrics in Fall River, MA designing for the home textiles market. His work is represented globally by the renowned design studio Colwill & Waud located in London. His designs have been purchased by such well-known firms as Pierre Frey, Manuel Canovas, Kravet, PKaufmann and Caspari.

Johnston has taught at RISD since 2008.
