Conscientiously Crafted in Italy
Students in a Wintersession travel course in Italy showed off shoe designs inspired by Italian craftsmanship at the RISD Library.

Students in Shoe Design: Perception, History & Prototyping, a Wintersession travel study course in Italy, shared the awesome outcomes of their immersion in Italian design and shoemaking at a pop-up gallery show in the library’s Visual + Material Resource Center on Friday, February 3.
For the month of January, 15 students from RISD and Brown studied Italian design processes in cities across northern Italy, sketching nonstop to capture their ideas and impressions along the way.
Kathleen Grevers, a long-time Apparel Design faculty member who led the trip, provided students with direct connections to Italy’s renowned automotive, industrial and fashion design industries.
“Exposure to vertical manufacturing methods along with principals of cultural sustainability motivated students to question and gather insights for new design processes,” she explains.
