One of only nine projects supported by the global, location-less organization in 2019, The Living combines the basic methodology of filmmaking with the tenets of survivalism. In other words, it brings together the acts of writing, composing, recording and editing with tracking, hunting, storing and moving—activating tensions between the living and the surviving.
“In collaboration with survivalists in and around New York City, we explore and embody the burden of threat as a means of opening up and revealing fragilities within our society, our ecosystem and ourselves,” the artists explain.
Berry and Doyle will be eligible to present at Project Anywhere’s biennial conference Anywhere and Elsewhere at Parsons Fine Art in 2020. The event features presentations by artists, scholars, curators and writers actively engaged with research “at the outermost limits of location specificity.”
“By visualizing, documenting, tearing open and fabricating the point of emergence [of insidious, slow-moving societal crises],” the artists note, “The Living invites viewers to examine their lives and the world around them through a lens of increased urgency and consequence.”
Experimental filmmaker Natalia Almada MFA 01 PH is one of four artists selected by Sundance for its 2018 Art of Nonfiction Fellowship program.
