Peter Stempel

Peter Stempel is an educator, social scientist and architect. In his current role as provost’s fellow he is developing curriculum to train artists and designers to collaborate more effectively with scientists and technical experts in deeply integrated interdisciplinary contexts.

Stempel left a successful career as an architect and nonprofit director to pursue the development of better spatial visualization and communication tools. His passion for this topic emerged from his work on complex and controversial land use issues in the intermountain west. His work demonstrated the potential for visualizations to include a broader and more diverse base of stakeholders in environmental decision making.

His current research includes the development and testing of hazard models, visualization tools and visualization ethics as well as discipline-based education research related to the curricula he is developing. He is committed to inclusive teaching practices and employs combinations of online content and activities to accommodate diverse learners and learning styles. His current teaching addresses visualization ethics, visualization methods, geodesign and public engagement, climate communication, risk communication related to natural and technological hazards and research methods for artists and designers working in the sciences.
