James Mercer

James J.A. Mercer is a New York-based artist working in painting, drawing, and animation. His work focuses on strange geometries in suburban architecture, with distortions in familiar spaces creating dissonance between feeling and form. James received an MFA from Columbia University and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. He has exhibited at Meliksetian | Briggs, Picture Theory, the Roswell Museum, Pioneer Works, and the Drawing Center. His collaborative animations with Yifan Jiang have been shown at IFFR, Slamdance, Today Art Museum Beijing, and the Eyeworks Festival, where he was the special guest in 2025.
