With support from RISD Alumni + Family Relations, the Families Association offers a variety of engagement opportunities for families that reflect the needs of our community. From virtual programming like first-year-focused webinars on navigating RISD and informational webinars about student services to celebrations bringing families to campus, we connect you to the resources and people that make our campus so unique.

Our Alumni + Family Relations staff is here to support you during your student’s RISD journey and beyond. Whether it is connecting you with resources or helping you to understand and navigate the opportunities and challenges of an arts education, our team is here to listen.
Resources
RISD provides many resources for families as their student navigates their creative journey. In addition to being the central place for RISD students to access services and resources, the Student Hub includes information and links that connect families to campus and to critical support staff.
Families Association Chair
Missy Waytena P 26
Missy Waytena P 26 is an environmental activist, film producer, and public interest lawyer based in the San Francisco Bay area. Her legal work focuses on the newly emerging field of Rights of Nature. A polymath with master’s degrees in integral education as well as philosophy, cosmology and consciousness and a Ph.D. in philosophy and religion, Waytena’s research integrates ecological consciousness with learning, aiming to equip students with the tools to become effective change agents in a rapidly evolving world. Her advocacy work includes writing and producing the film the Future of Energy and producing the film Last Stand: Saving the Elwha River’s Legacy Forests, which was a key part of the successful campaign to halt logging along Washington’s Elwha River.
Waytena is a dynamic volunteer. She works to expand enforceable human and ecological rights by serving on the boards of various non-profits, including chairing the Earth Law Center. Parent to Cal Waytena BRDD 26, who is studying Sculpture at RISD and futurology and design and Brown University, Waytena is a member of the RISD Families Philanthropy Committee and 1877 Society Provost’s Circle along with her husband William Leo “Bill” Waytena Jr. P 26.
Volunteer and engagement opportunities
The Families Association offers many opportunities for you to volunteer and support the work of Alumni + Family Relations. Whether it is acting as a resource for first-year families, helping to build a culture of philanthropy or providing event support, our volunteers play a crucial role in all that we offer.
Families ambassador committee
Members play a crucial role in building a supportive environment and answering questions for incoming first-year families.
Philanthropy committee
Members support RISD’s fundraising efforts through planning and attending events, sharing the impact of the RISD Fund and thanking generous supporters.
Programming and events committee
Members assist in planning in-person and virtual events to increase participation among current, first-year, and alumni families.
Global Committee
Members support RISD’s international students and families by advising on programming, communications, and engagement. They help shape events and resources that build community, increase cultural visibility and strengthen support across the RISD network.

Throughout the year, the Families Association hosts many events for our community. From campus-wide celebrations like Families Weekend and Commencement to local events in communities around the globe and virtual informational webinars, we look forward to connecting with each and everyone of you.

RISD Welcome, New York City
The RISD Club of New York City, the Families Association, and alums Samuel Wilson & Robert Hult invite alumni, current students and families to join them at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery to welcome incoming students and their families into the RISD community.
Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery was co-founded by Samuel Wilson (BFA 01 Printing) & Robert Hult (BFA 01 Painting). Currently on view in the gallery is a solo exhibition by RISD alum Adam Stephen Novak (BFA 01 Painting) and a group show which includes works from alum Alex Dodge (BFA 01 Painting).
We look forward to gathering and sharing insights into life at RISD and enjoying the alumni work on view in the gallery.
