Global Arts and Cultures

Inviting inquiry into contemporary issues at the intersection of globalization and cultural production, Global Arts and Cultures (GAC) unites critical theories from the humanities and social sciences with studies in the history and theory of visual, design, performative, and literary arts. Throughout the program, you investigate diverse forms of making and how they entangle with systems of power and resistance.

Ruchika Nambiar MA 23 — book artist/designer/writer

Already an accomplished artist and graphic designer before coming to RISD in 2022, Ruchika Nambiar is a multihyphenate creative practitioner who produces experimental books and stories spanning a wide range of mediums, audiences, and scales. In both her independent and client-based work, she explores how to synthesize mixed- and multimedia forms, scholarly and creative writing, and interaction design in order to create what she calls “experimental narrative objects.” With a resumé that includes teaching at RISD and several public speaking engagements, Nambiar has also begun a mentorship initiative—called The Creative Finishing School—to help emerging practitioners navigate the field.
