Xiwen Zhang

Xiwen Zhang (she/her) is a multidisciplinary designer, artist, and educator whose work investigates perception, anticipation, and mediation through moving image, generative systems, creative programming, installation, text, and printed matter. Working across analogue and digital processes, her practice explores translation, reversal, and feedback between material, image, and system, often extending into spatial installations, mechanical processes, and rule-based structures.

She holds an MFA in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art and a BFA in Film/Video from the California Institute of the Arts. At Yale’s Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM), she served as a studio fellow from 2024–25 and later as an ultra space fellow. During her time at CCAM, she led workshops on projection mapping that moved between analogue camera obscura techniques, digital window projection, and spatial image-making, while also designing publications and spatial installations.

Zhang has taught design and foundation courses at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. As a designer, she has worked across editorial design, exhibition identities, artist books, experimental publications, and institutional printed matter. Her work on Retrospecta was recognized by AIGA’s 50 Books | 50 Covers.
