Lois Harada

Critic - Printmaking

Lois Harada is an artist and printmaker based in North Providence, RI. Harada utilizes text and the medium of print to tell her family’s story of Japanese American incarceration—her paternal grandmother was interned in Poston, AZ from 1942–45. She takes inspiration from propaganda printed and distributed by the US government and prints with type and equipment similar to that which would have created the original works.

Her practice is bolstered by residencies, including a five-week fellowship at Anderson Ranch in Colorado in 2022 and a two-week stay at the Virginia Center for Contemporary Arts in 2024. She was part of the initial cohort of New Voices at Print Center New York in 2023. She has served on the boards of Rhode Island nonprofits New Urban Arts, Dirt Palace Public Projects, My Homecourt and the Art in City Life Commission for the city of Providence.

In addition to teaching, she also works at DWRI Letterpress, a commercial letterpress print shop, and maintains a studio space at artist collective Make Do Studios in Providence.
