Lindsey Beal
Lindsey Beal is a photo-based artist working in Providence. Using research, collections, and archives, her work examines historical American views on technology, parenting, and sexual and reproductive health, and how they reflect today’s political and social landscape. Committed to process, she connects her work to early photographic history, makers, and techniques, often incorporating sculptural photographs, hand papermaking, or artist books into her work.
Beal’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Slate France, BBC Mundo, New Scientist, Lenscratch, and Feature Shoot. Her art has also been published in many periodicals and textbooks, including Designing Motherhood. She has mounted solo shows in such venues as the Vermont Center for Photography, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Danforth Art Museum, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Beal was a finalist for Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 200 in 2016 and 2018 and received a RISD Faculty Development Grant in 2019 and a Part Time Faculty Technology Award in 2023. Her work is included in many public collections including the Boston Athenaeum, the RISD Museum, Duke University, the Candela Collection, and the Center for Creative Photography.
