Rhode Island School of Design Presents 'RISD Craft' 2015
September 10, 2015
Rhode Island School of Design [RISD] presents the first iteration of a new juried exhibition known as RISD Craft 2015 on Saturday, October 10 from 10 am to 5 pm. The outdoor sales exhibition features handmade fine art and design work by more than 90 alumni and 30 current students presented on Benefit Street (between Waterman and Hopkins streets). Free and open to the public, RISD Craft is part of RISD by Design, the annual alumni reunion and parents’ weekend.
RISD Craft speaks to the quality, attention to detail and mastery of craftsmanship taught in RISD’s studios. The occasion provides an opportunity to speak with exhibiting artists and designers while shopping for fine art, designed goods and handmade items in a wide variety of media.
A twist on RISD’s art sales of the past, RISD Craft is the first one to be juried – by RISD faculty and alumni who are all working artists and designers themselves. The sales exhibition also features two new forms of recognition: the People’s Choice Award, which will be presented based on votes cast by visitors to the show, and the Emerging Artist Award, a prize given by the jury to a graduate from the last 10 years for exceptionally promising work. Awards include automatic acceptance to next year’s show.
Held at the heart of campus, RISD Craft is one of many events to enjoy throughout RISD by Design weekend. RISD parents and alumni visiting for the weekend take hands-on classes, tour studios and visit the RISD Museum. On Friday, October 9 at 2 pm the community will also come together for the official inauguration of Rosanne Somerson as RISD’s 17th president. Following the inauguration ceremony, RISD will celebrate at an evening block party. California-based ceramics artist Adam Silverman [BArch 88] will present RISD DNA: The First 25 Years, this year’s alumni keynote address, at 5:30 pm on Friday evening.
