Alban Bassuet is an internationally recognized planner, designer and acoustician for the arts and culture built environment. Addressing the need for informal and affordable performance environments, he uses natural settings and found spaces to create ephemeral venues for mid-size audiences. Since 1999 he has designed such world-class performance spaces as the new Greek National Opera House, Le Rosey Concert Hall in Switzerland and the Taipei Asian Pop Music Center. He also collaborates with artists such as James Turrell, Ai Wei Wei, Philip Glass, Mark di Suvero, Patrick Dougherty and Stephen Vitiello on mixed-media art installations. More recently Bassuet led the design and was director of the Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana, recognized by Time magazine as “one of the world’s 100 greatest places to visit.”

SECTION DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on factors influencing the design of the interior environment through exploring issues of anthropometrics (the study of the characteristics of the human body), ergonomics (the application of anthropometric data to design), and proxemics (the study of the effect of cultural/psychological factors on design). It will be complemented by a study of acoustics as it relates to the relationship between the built environment and sound; predicting and designing for the acoustic performance of spaces, and executing acoustic measurements (impulse response, reverberations).
Open to Graduate Interior Architecture Students.
