Sara Cohen is a founding principal and registered landscape architect at ASK+, an award-winning, interdisciplinary practice in Cambridge, MA. At ASK+, Cohen’s professional practice engages in both the design and construction phases of projects. Serving as both the project designer and construction manager affords the ASK+ team the ability to work at a 1-to-1 scale and carry a direct connection from concept to construction. With ASK+, she works locally in the Boston metro area with a focus on urban infill and public realm projects, including the Nibble Kitchen, Lamplighter Brewery and North Meadow on The Greenway. North Meadow on The Greenway recently won a Boston Society of Landscape Architects award for General Design and a World Landscape Architecture Award of Excellence. Prior to ASK+, Cohen was at Hargreaves Associates and Sasaki Associates where she contributed to a range of projects, including the Chicago Riverwalk, the Lawn on D and the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade at the Port of Los Angeles.

Cohen’s research flows from her professional practice with the primary objective of developing and improving upon models of practice in landscape architecture construction for greater habitat biodiversity and sustainability. In particular, her interests lie in developing construction technologies around nature-based systems and contributing to the theoretical discourse on built work within landscape architecture.

SECTION DESCRIPTION

This seminar builds on the class Material Logic to investigate and test landscape materials and construction methods with an emphasis on prototyping and digital fabrication. Students will learn to take an idea from concept to prototype to 1:1 construction. Through research, lectures, and site walks, this course will build student's understanding of current landscape construction methods and ask them to develop new materials and assemblies to respond to specific site and design considerations. Through exercises, students will advance their CAD and Rhino skills, as well as learn how to prototype ideas through the use of 3D printers and CNC machine.

Majors are pre-registered for this course by the department. Enrollment is limited to Landscape Architecture Students.
