Angus Lockyer

Angus Lockyer is a historian who has taught Japanese and East Asian and global history in North Carolina and London, with a particular focus on urban history. His podcast, historicity, on the histories of London and Tokyo, is available on all platforms.

Lockyer has written about Japan’s experience of dragons, expos, golf, and museums. His book, Exhibitionist Japan: The Spectacle of Development, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2025.

He collaborated with colleagues at the British Museum on the redesign of the Japanese galleries in 2006 and the special exhibition Hokusai: Beyond the Great Wave in 2017. Japan: A History in Objects, based on the museum’s collection, is forthcoming in 2026.
