THAD Graduate Concentration

A graduate concentration in Theory and History of Art and Design lets you augment your advanced degree with 15 focused credits in art history, theory and criticism. Ideal for students interested in teaching after graduation, this course of study is flexible for you to hone in on the history and theory of your studio discipline, or on any area that interests you.

With knowledge of the histories and theories of art and visual culture increasingly demanded of artists and designers, the THAD graduate concentration offers a structured curriculum in the history, theory and criticism of Western art, as well as that of cultures throughout the world. Ready access to the RISD Museum’s collections and curatorial staff further enrich your studies.

You may choose to focus on the history and theory of your particular studio discipline or any other area that interests you. For RISD graduates who go on to teach studio classes, it prepares you to teach art history and theory classes as well.

To complete the concentration, you may incorporate any Liberal Arts graduate degree requirements and certain graduate courses offered within individual degree programs. All master’s degree candidates are eligible to add this concentration to their program of study.

In order to declare your intention to concentrate in Theory and History of Art and Design, please complete the form below which will be submitted to the THAD coordinator. Copies will be sent to the registrar and the head of your major department. There is no penalty for withdrawing from the concentration.
