Invest in faculty excellence

"At RISD we develop the artist as a whole, knowing that our graduates need the flexibility to adapt to a changing world."

Without our extraordinary faculty of artists, designers and scholars, there would be no RISD. They are the backbone of the singular educational experience that is so transformative for our students.

By sharing their insights at RISD and beyond, RISD faculty members impact our lives in profound ways, influencing how we create art, deliver healthcare, design our public spaces and use technology. Esteemed by RISD students and alumni as well as creative leaders from around the world, our faculty produce remarkable works of art, architecture, design and research.

As dedicated as they are to pursuing their creative practices, RISD faculty are equally devoted to their teaching. They skillfully shoulder the responsibility of educating the next generation of artists and designers who are making—and remaking—our culture and our world.

Sustaining the creative learning environment our faculty makes possible requires our renewed investment. We invite you to help us make sure that highly talented and diverse faculty come to teach at RISD, that they stay at RISD and that they have the resources they need.

Leadership levels of faculty support

We welcome your support of RISD’s academic leaders and faculty. The following opportunities are available:

Deanships: $5 Million

Endowing a deanship of Architecture + Design, Fine Arts, Experimental and Foundation Studies, Liberal Arts, Libraries or Faculty is a powerful way to secure the quality of art and design education at RISD. Our distinguished deans provide the strategic vision necessary to advance their divisions, develop new academic programs and leverage RISD’s resources to deliver the greatest benefits to our students. By endowing a deanship, you will enhance the stature of the position and provide valuable resources for advancing RISD’s innovation and excellence.

Department Heads: $4 Million

Your investment in departmental leadership will bolster RISD’s ability to attract and retain esteemed creative leaders, educators and administrators whose vision is essential to shaping RISD’s next generation of artists and designers. Your gift also will make strategic investments in such areas as faculty stipends, faculty recruitment, research expenses, equipment purchases and other resources that will enhance departmental excellence.

Professorships: $3 Million

By funding a professorship, you will ensure that RISD is able to recruit and retain top-flight faculty members. Your generosity will offer faculty the support they need to pursue new areas of creative inquiry and research and to develop new teaching methods. In the world of art and design education, competition for talent is intense, particularly for faculty from historically underrepresented groups. Endowed professorships are an investment that will strengthen RISD’s position as a leader in art and design education and research.

"Endowed professorships . . . encourage new research and works that would accrue to the benefit of faculty, students and the visibility of RISD."

Schiller Family Endowed Chair in Furniture Design John Dunnigan

Career Development Professorships: $2 Million

Your support for a career development professorship will offer important recognition and resources to outstanding young faculty as they advance their careers and grow as teachers and mentors for RISD students. You can help RISD recruit and retain a diverse array of rising artists and designers who are emerging as dynamic educational and creative leaders in their fields.

Visiting Professorships: $1 Million

By providing the opportunity to host visiting faculty, you will support many benefits to the RISD community. Visiting scholars share new perspectives and creative approaches, and they often assist RISD students in developing research projects in their home countries. Visiting scholars participate in art and design collaborations, teach innovative courses and mentor students. Your investment will ensure that RISD is continually enriched by the presence of scholars and makers from around the world.

Established in 2013, the Vikram and Geetanjali Kirloskar Visiting Scholars in Painting endowment continues to have a profound impact at RISD and its deepening commitment to global engagement. In aiming to explore, strengthen and develop dialogue between South Asia-based artists and the creative community here, Professor Dennis Congdon 75 PT and the Kirloskar Advisory Group have brought a range of established and emerging scholars and artists to teach semester-long courses, lead shorter residencies and give artists’ talks or participate in panel discussions:

2014 - Chitra Ganesh
2015 - Raqs Media Collective
2016 - Shazhia Sikander
2017 - Pallavi Paul
2018 - Asim Waqif

2020 - Salman Toor
2020 - Chitra Ganesh
2022 - Huma Bhabha 85 PR

"Students and the broader community benefit from our visitors’ fresh thinking and wider horizons and the Kirloskars’ support fosters new work, new liaisons and new avenues of study—and for this our community is tremendously grateful."
