All RISD undergraduate students are required to take a third of their classes in Liberal Arts, a division that includes four departments:
- History, Philosophy, and the Social Sciences (HPSS)
- Literary Arts and Studies (LAS)
- Teaching and Learning in Art and Design (TLAD)
- Theory and History of Art and Design (THAD)
In addition to offering a wide range of courses, HPSS, LAS and THAD also allow for a concentration—a more focused program of study for students interested in concentrating their liberal arts studies within one of the departments. Liberal Arts faculty are also open to working with students one-on-one through for-credit independent study projects (ISPs).
In addition to Master of Arts in Art and Design Education and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees offered by the graduate level-only TLAD department, the division offers an additional 1.5-year Masters of Arts program in Global Arts and Cultures.
