BUILDING A STRONGER FOUNDATION
SECTION DESCRIPTION
This course begins with a strong foundation in academic drawing, equipping students with essential technical skills and an understanding of traditional visual principles. Building on this groundwork, students are then encouraged to move beyond conventional boundaries, engaging with experimental approaches and interdisciplinary practices. By exploring diverse perspectives and methodologies, they will cultivate innovative thinking and develop the ability to create meaningful connections across fields. CRITICAL GLOBALISMS
SECTION DESCRIPTION
Introduces students to ways of thinking about arts and culture comparatively, through interrogation of the very terms global, "arts" and "culture." Critical Globalisms emphasizes the development of broad theoretical perspectives within which to situate specific research interests. A requirement in the first semester of the GAC MA degree, Critical Globalisms provides a common vocabulary and experience for all GAC MA students. The course will run as a seminar with weekly reading assignments, regular writing assignments, and in class discussion.

CRITICAL GLOBALISMS
SECTION DESCRIPTION
Provides an opportunity for independent research related to the discussions, topics, readings and other activities from GAC-700G. Students will begin to develop areas of focus in order to identify future electives and research topics leading toward the Master's Thesis.

RESEARCH ISSUES
SECTION DESCRIPTION
Introduces a variety of interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisiciplinary approaches to thinking about cultural imagination and cultural production. Students explore their own research habits and consider the viability of standard as well as experimental approaches for the kinds of projects they want to pursue. Key to the work of the course is exploration of the challenges (definitional, practical, ethical) that arise in doing different kinds of research. A requirement in the first semester of the GAC MA degree, the course creates a common vocabulary and experience for all GAC MA students. POLITICS AND ETHICS OF REPRESENTATION
SECTION DESCRIPTION
Introduces some of the complex challenges that confront those who engage with making meaning in the arts. The course begins by establishing an interdisciplinary vocabulary and methodology to address questions of ethics and representation in the arts. The second segment of the course interrogates specific case studies in the politics and ethics of representation. Case studies may be drawn from art, design, literature, music, performance or other forms of cultural production. The course will be run as a seminar with weekly reading assignments, regular writing assignments and in class discussion.

THEORIES OF THE IMAGE
SECTION DESCRIPTION
Images provoke, hail, console, and incriminate us. They disrupt our understanding of time; expose that which governs our lives and deaths; and influence how we negotiate selfhood and otherness. Yet, we pay little attention to the ontology of the image. This course asks: what does it mean to read and respond to images contemporaneously? What are the uses and abuses of images? Are we too passive to all we see, or visually too tired to care? Students will read a variety of texts; debate and discuss in class; and submit assignments that knit together their analyses of readings with an artist whose work they are investigating in their own research. We will be reading theoretical writings that are primarily concerned with the painterly, the photographic, and the moving image. Readings are paired thematically. Some of the themes addressed in this class are: the ontology of the image, "images and reading," "images and history," "images and race," "images of / and trauma," "images and desire," and "images and death".

PROSPECTUS SEMINAR
SECTION DESCRIPTION
Provides guidance through the process of devising, writing and revising the prospectus that will govern their Master's Thesis. Students will develop the prospectus through in-depth research into a topic of their choice, regular submission of written work, feedback from peers and faculty, and revision of written work. Readings and discussion will provide additional structure to the course. At the end of the semester, students will submit the prospectus to the First and Second Readers of the MA Committee. Acceptance of the prospectus is a requirement for continuing to GAC-799G: Thesis.
