STUDENTS RETURN TO CAMPUS FOR FALL SEMESTER AS OF AUGUST 30. GO TO COVID.RISD.EDU FOR DETAILS.

Home to an extensive collection of research objects, the Color Lab is a prime location for investigating the significance of color across all art and design fields. A curated library of books and reference materials helps students and faculty place color in historical context, while a wide range of specialized equipment supports experimentation in creative practice.

Exploring color in depth

As a center for research and exploration, the Color Lab encourages makers to explore all aspects of color—its history, material dimensions, scientific properties and cultural significance—as a core component of art and design practice.

The lab houses several resources for inspiring in-depth inquiry, including hundreds of common and rare dry pigments and textile dyes, a diverse library of reference materials, and laboratory glassware for experimenting with color mixing. This also makes the Color Lab a hub for innovative teaching and studio learning across disciplines.
